WCS Sydney: Season opener

On Saturday 7:36am the 2012 race season starts right in front of the Sydney Opera House. Here are some quotes of Emma from today's press conference: On her ability to race well at big races: “It’s probably something that I haven’t really consciously thought of, it’s just been brought about my circumstance. I like to race when I can and I like to put everything on the line when it comes to it, I never really think about in particular, being a big race performer so to speak. But I enjoy the adrenaline of racing and I enjoy the big races. And I see each of these races becoming more and more important in the lead up to an important year. I’m just looking forward to putting my best foot forward on Saturday.” On the lead in to Beijing: “You tend to put more expectations on yourself than anything and I never felt that Vanessa (Fernandes) and I were the only two on that start line, I think everyone on that start line in Beijing was a potential winner and I had a potential opportunity like everyone else. I think the same goes for every race and for another Olympics. If I’m there on the start line then all I want to know is that i’ve put my best foot forward, left no stone unturned, wanting to give my give my best performance.” *** triathlon.org***

So its very exciting to be a part of a pretty special team. The qantas athlete program is now official & rest of the athletes and I had a jam packed day last December getting all the material required to put the program together. It was super fun catching up with some of the athletes from Beijing, but also meeting the new members and seeing the group come together as it so hard with everyone's schedules. Unfortunately I wasn't able to be there for the official launch, but looking forward to seeing it unfold when I come back. The training here in Stellenbosch has been fantastic again and the weather pretty phenomenal, the scenery always spectacular no matter how many times you see it and a great group of people to do it with. Some more pictures will follow... Emma. *** Get more details about QF 2012: London Countdown

Review: The 2011 season so far...

I thought you got wiser as you got older. I guess this comes with taking risks, new challenges and looking at ways to improve. However, especially in sport I never seem to stop learning about myself when things aren’t always going quite the way I would like. The base season was going really well and maybe a little too well in pushing the boundaries of the body. Getting excited and looking forward to the season ahead I found myself having to take a step back with a foot injury leading in the first races of Mooloolaba and Sydney. Being a little frustrated I found myself trying to rush things for Madrid and lost track of preparing myself for the bombarding swim starts of the World Championship Series races. The most vital part of the race I was getting lost in the washing machine of girls and letting the race go on ahead without me. So they say sometimes you have to take 2 steps back in order to take 1 forward. I re-assessed things, missed Kitzbuhel and went about changing things for Hamburg. It paid off and being a cold wetsuit swim – which is not my ideal conditions it set me up for a podium finish and to be a part of history celebrating with the two other Aussie Emmas. Next stop was London – the official Olympic course and I was excited to see what was in store. Feeling a little more rested and more race ready after Hamburg I had prepared as much I thought I could. Unfortunately, the only thing I wasn’t able to prepare for was the English summer weather. Considering being very accustomed to warmer conditions I was really happy to have a strong swim, despite it being without a wetsuit. However, the not so favorable cold wind outside played havoc with my body and I suffered really badly on the run with cramps all through my legs and my asthma playing up with dust along with it. So although 5th may not have been the result I was hoping for it has really given me an insight into what precautions for the cold I would need to take, if I get the ticket to race in less than 12months time at the Olympics. So we may get older and wiser, though we never stop learning!!!! Emma.

So excited to be back on the Podium in a WCS race and what better way to celebrate with the other 2 Aussie Emma's!! Thankfully the rain held off just in time as we could wash off the German beer from the podium celebrations. It was Age vs Youth in my first ever sprint finish with young Emma Jackson. Very excited for the future of our sport and for Moffy to be back in top form. Thank you to all the crowd in Hamburg for your support - luckily it wasn't hard to be biased as to who to cheer for:) Looking forward to London in 3 weeks!!! Emma.
